Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit is committed to training its staff in a number of different specialist areas. Victoria Falls Safari Lodge recently hosted a set of first aid training courses under the experienced eye of Tim Scarrott. Tim’s commitment and involvement in conservation and first is well know and he is a sub-committee member of Save African Rhino Foundation. Tim is also a professional paramedic with years of experience in treating patients and training the next generation.
- Tim Scarratt with the VFAPU scouts
VFAPU scouts are often out in the bush for long periods and are pitted against armed and dangerous poachers. The training was styled around these unique working conditions, and the medical skills that they now have will allow them to treat a patient should they be involved in incident or accident in the bush.
The VFAPU scouts were enthusiastic students and the certificates that were awarded were testament to their willingness to learn new skills and a credit to Tim Scarrott in his teaching methods. Being involved in training of this nature is not just about learning new skills. It is also about improving the moral of the scouts. They do an incredible hard job under difficult conditions, and they have to understand the human side as well as natures side
The importance of training and the association with Save Africa Rhino Foundation cannot be stressed enough. It is vitally important for knowledge to be shared and for new skills to be learned. This in turn filters down and invariably helps to uplift the local communities that live in close proximity to the protected areas.
Tim Scarratt’s training schedule is pretty gruelling and after this successful Victoria Falls sessions he is on the road again. Next stop Sinamatella, on the way to Hwange main camp and then Matoba National park.
VFAPU would like to thank Tim and Victoria Falls Safari Lodge for their commitment to the preservation of the wildlife in and around Victoria Falls and for there continued involvement in the investment into the local community.
